How do I explain to a prospective employer why I am considering a position below my current position?
I am currently a Vice President at a construction company. I was promoted in 2018 and prior to that I held the position of Director of Marketing. I have been with my current company since the formation in 2005. The owner of the business and I had worked together at another construction company for 8 years prior to that. My promotion to VP was delayed due to the owners desire to hire a VP of Operations and Director of Interiors. He told me that he needed my help to get these positions up and running but my promotion was imminent. The 1st VP of Operations only lasted 2 years and was let go so the search and onboarding of a new VP ensued. Fast forward 3 years and the DOI who proved to be a bad hire ended up resigning and I have come to learn that the 2nd VP who is underperforming in his role makes $50k more than I do and also has a golden parachute so it would cost a lot of money for my boss to fire him. Unfortunately. my boss looks to me to fill in the gaps (I get assigned projects that he is just not able to complete) in addition to performing my own role. I currently oversee all aspects of office management, marketing, Business Development, IT, HR and have 4 direct reports. I have been the only female executive at both construction firms and am tired of the huge gap in pay between the men and women in our industry. I am not afraid of working hard and love the variety & challenge of my role but I am so burned out and feel like my job is taking a toll on my physical and mental well-being. I have just recently put my resume together and see some great Director of Marketing roles that I am interested in applying for. How do I explain my willingness to take a lesser role on at this point in my career without talking bad about my current boss/company?
