My company takes a very proactive approach to mental health. We offer EAP with several free counseling appointments for people that are experiencing difficulties. But more than that, we try to help people manage their anxiety, finances, health, etc., before they reach a point where EAP is necessary. We have monthly wellness incentives, on-site gym/fitness classes, encourage daily walking through team competitions, offer health/weight loss programs, smoking cessation programs. We even have special rooms where employees can go disconnect for a while, access apps to help with meditation/relaxation, etc. Having an organization that constantly reminds employees to be aware of their mental health and encourages taking the time to care for yourself has made our work environment much more calm, collaborative and cohesive.

Over the years I have worked for various agencies that offer a program called EAP. EAP offers various confidential services such as mental health counseling and can be specific to the job that you are in. The information is kept confidential. Employer’s can also mandate employees who are struggling to work with an EAP representative and not always in a punitive fashion, but in a caring suggestive form. In the event that you’re current employer does not offer such a program, you can research self care tips. If you have insurance and are looking for more structured therapies call your insurance carrier they can provide info on in-network providers (mental health counselors, acupuncture, reiki.....). I’ve seen a quote circulating that says “Self care is how you get your power back”. I love that idea and I am working to honor my self care. It’s important that we take time to restore ourselves as we cannot pour the richness we have to offer from a vessel running on “E”. Be well
