Tips for dealing with the "winter blues"?

With shorter, darker days and dropping temperatures, I've been feeling less energetic and less motivated. How do you boost your mental health this time of year to fight off the "winter blues"?

Exercise is definitely my go-to blues killer! Even if it's just putting on a song and dancing around the house. I swim all winter and ride my bike--the bracing air wakes me up and helps me forget my troubles. Ask a friend to go for a hike--you're both outdoors and you have company!

Honestly, I moved to Phoenix, AZ from the east coast in part for this reason! And I agree with @Jill L Ferguson — taking a food-based vitamin D supplement helped me a lot.

Winters can be tough. I focus on things that make me feel cozy, for example: Having my coffee maker programed to brew when my alarm goes off, burning a candle, winter themed lotion scents, a light therapy lamp, journaling (and always find something good to write about!) and get some sun light as much as possible. Hope this helps! Be well.

I meditate in my front window which goes from floor to ceiling, letting the sunlight hit me and taking the time to draw energy back to me for 20 minutes instead of out into the world (like it does for the rest of the day)

I definitely agree with getting outside for a short walk, even in brisk weather! Or if you have a pup, get them out for a walk or to the dog park for a romp in the snow, my dog loves to jump around in the snow :)

One of my old coworkers used to have a sunlamp. It's supposed to help with mood boosting and the winter blahs.

Try to get outside for a walk every day, or at least sit by the window as you eat lunch. The good news is the days are now getting longer! We're on the "right side" of the cycle. If you can do so, take a trip to someplace warm for a few days, it'll do wonders!

I agree that sunshine and vitamin D are super important during shorter days and both help with motivation and health. Exercise is also important to keeping energy levels up so put on some dance music and boogie where no one is watching. :)

Love both of your responses so much. Thanks for the advice! Have a place down in FL I may have to escape to for a weekend :)
