I am in an entry level management role, and yesterday I asked the female Director who ran our division to mentor me. They aren't any women between me and her in our division, and I was really excited at the prospect of being able to learn from her.
She told me that she would NOT mentor me - that she had to get to the top on her own and I should pull up my bootstraps and do it myself, just like she did.
I sat there with my mouth open. Aren't we supposed to be helping each other? I didn't even know what to say, so I quickly thanked her for her time and hustled out of her office.
I am still in shock. She's the only female above me in the ranks, and I don't know why she doesn't want to help me. She mentors several of the male managers.
I can ask a male Director to mentor me, but that kind of defeats the point. What should I do?
