Upper Back Pain

My shoulders and upper back hurt every single day. I can’t get a massage every day, and I know I need to improve my posture. Any other advice for this issue?

Have you considered trying a chiropractor? While a massage will focus on the muscle, the chiropractor will go deeper (literally) to your bones and look at you as the full skeleton that carries you. Try some yoga postures where you gently open your chest (draw shoulders forward) but do so mindfully. Without a teacher there to check your alignment it might not exactly fix what you intend to fix. Check your insurance as certain number of visits with a chiro might be covered before you need a script from your MD.

thank you for this. I’ve had a lot of suggestions that I should see a chiropractor. I also found out today that my work has a health day and they give out 15 min massages. I’m going to look into chiropractors too

Labtop stands, which fold down are also good ...

If you use a computer daily, make sure your monitor is on a stand so that you are looking directly at it, and not downward. I had the same problem until I bought a 4" monitor stand. It worked wonders!

My colleague had a standing desk, so I don’t see why my organization wouldn’t provide me with one too. I’m going to ask. Glad it helped you!

I have been facing this as well and just saw a chiropractor yesterday who took the pain down from an 8 to a 4 so maybe try that?

My dad recommended a chiropractor too. Did they give you any recommendations for once you’re at home?

They didn't yet because they encouraged me to get an xray so they can "look under the hood" to see whats causing it. Which if yours is persistent for some time may be a good idea. They will likely give you things to do at home once they can drill down to what is causing the pain. I havent gone for an xray but already feel better the next day from the few things they did there so let's see what happens tomorrow. =)

And I hope after they look into it further they can nip that pain in the bud for good!

Stuff like this generally comes from posture. Are you hunching over at work? Do you work at a desk? If you can, get a desk chair that tilts back and get into the habit of working tilted slightly back, just enough so your back is putting pressure on the back of the seat, not hunched forward. That's helped me a lot.

Yes yes and yes. I try to be better about my posture and next thing I know my old habits catch up to me. It didn’t bother me as much a few years ago, but now that I’m in my late 30s I’m feeling it.

Yoga, a standing desk (hard to slouch when standing!), a better keyboard, a better pillow, possibly a chiropractor. All helpful. Also helpful, less time looking at a cell phone (if you are guilty of that, as I am)

Lol I’m looking at my cell phone right now on my train ride home, and trying not to hunch over too much. A good pillow is key and a good amount of sleep.

Another option is to try a posture / upper back support bra. There is a review of them here: https://researchcore.org/best-back-support-bras-reviews/

I have been having severe back pain and trying various things ... the ones that work for me are specific yoga stretches and taking a daily walk for at least 20 mins every day, have you tried either?

Exercise does help! I was getting into a great routine of going to the gym everyday until I started working again full-time a few weeks ago. It’s really flared up more after sitting in an office all day, and I’m probably tense from being nervous about everything I need to refresh myself on and learn (I was stay-at-home for 5 years). I haven’t made time for walks since I started, and you’re right — we need to make time for that in our day for a walk no matter what.
