My interviewers have not contacted me when they said they would. How should I proceed?

I have been pursuing a position with a local real estate company. I went to the first interview and was quickly invited back in for a second interview. I was told that they would be making a decision last Thursday, but when Thursday came, I received the following text message from one of my interviewers: "I just got back from my trip. We are down to just two candidates and we are working hard to make a decision. We have been very impressed with you and think you would be a great addition to the team. You can plan on having a decision from us by Monday night." I was anxiously checking my phone and emails yesterday hoping for some good news, but I haven't received any news at all. At this point, I'm not even sure if they have made a decision yet. Of course, I'm in a panic now because it seems that most employers don't update candidates that they reject and I'm concerned that they chose the other candidate instead. Should I reach out to this employer?

Reach out to the recruiter or whoever has been your hiring contact. Let them know you are excited about the opportunity and was inquiring about whether a decision has been made. If not, ask for timeframe of when they will let you know.

I might wait another day or two and then send an e-mail titled something like “status request” asking if you are still in the running and re-iterating your strong points and active interest. If they went with the other candidate: send an e-mail titled “keeping the door open”, thank them for their consideration and feedback, and say that you’d be interested in other positions/similar roles that arise. BTW: should you be in a similar position in the future and receive a “We’ll be deciding by x date/time,” email, good idea to write a *brief* thank you note reiterating your strong interest and why you are an excellent fit for the position.

It sounds to me like they may have offered the job to the other candidate and are going back and forth with him/her. It sounds like that to me. They may still want you and be keeping you as their next option, but I wouldn't hold my breath. If they do reach back out to you, I would proceed with caution... If you weren't their first choice, they may not put their full weight behind bringing you on (and may not be open to negotiation, for example.) I hope it works out, and if it doesn't, there will be other opportunities, especially for a candidate who was in the top 2 for this role.
