Should I Go For It?

My office has an opening that would be a promotion to me. Obviously they aren't considering me since there has been no communication directly about it. Should I still apply? I have five years vested in this company and I've been begging for more tasks, responsibility, etc for at least 2. If I don't get this, I may start looking outside the organization.

I definitely think you should go for it! If anything it can solidify in your boss' mind that YES you are looking to continue growth. I also think that regardless of you're being chosen for the position it's definitely time for a candid conversation. Why exactly are you not being considerd after 5 years with this company? Can you boss put that into measurable and attainable goals? If not then perhaps it truly IS time to move on and away from the company. Being challenged and continuing growth is a huge part of everyone's career, good luck and I hope that you are able to continue to grow!

Why wouldn't you go for it? Do it, its a great experience, and you'll be letting the team know you are interested in moving up and are committed to the company. Good for you!

Absolutely; go for it! If anything, this will be a good learning experience. Dive deep into what you want and avoid settling. The more time goes by when you are not making forward progress, the more you will regret it. Believe in yourself - good luck!!!

Agree with everyone here. Apply for the job. We have been programmed, from a young age, that if we do good work, we get rewarded, (honor roll, awards, trophies) but in the real world, it is very rare that you are just recognized for your contributions. And research shows an astonishing statistic that men will apply for a job even if they are only have 50% of the requirements where women need to have 90% or more to qualify for a job. Confidence outweighs competence. You've got this.

Yes (and skip the should I?)! Your goals are yours. Be ambitious. Aim for the moon because even if you miss-you've reached the stars. Never ask permission. Never apologize for being great.
