You see a job and you decide to Apply. What is the number one factor that makes you apply to that job?

Is it because you feel especially qualified for the role? Or because you can see who posted the job? Or is it because you are interested in that specific company? Any insights would be appreciated!

With each position I have applied for, it's because it focuses in on an area that I want to expand my knowledge and/or experience in that I feel would result in both the company and myself benefiting from being in the role. They will benefit from my expertise and I would benefit from what the position offers. For example, I was working in a professional services role with a product that utilized a variety of databases and it was time for me to move on. A position came up for a product that used a technology that was related, but new to me and would also allow me to make better use my Project Management training. So, the position a) provided me with a challenge b) an opportunity to learn a new technology c) built upon my ongoing training and d) utilized my past experience.

It has to be something that interests me so the job description is key. At this point in my career I don't want to take a job just for the paycheck - I cannot sacrifice myself and my health anymore (even if it pays well) From there, I would explore the company, culture, and the account/team I would be working with. The salary and benefits are of course huge importance but those are more final decision factors

Qualifications, of course, and then and the company itself--are they leading their field? Do they have an honest, employee-focused organization? What do the reviews of this company from former and current employees say?

I am selective in the positions that I apply for. I start with what are my career goals, and how will the position that is posted help me in achieving those goals. The company values/culture plays a big role in whether I apply, and then followed by the qualifications of the job. Always look at reviews and reach out to anyone in your network that has worked there to get a real feel for whether it is the right place for you. The rest will come.

What am I being asked to do? That's really my number one concern. I apply if it's something I am good at and believe is worth doing. I also consider company culture. I check reviews on Glassdoor and Indeed. I also check LinkedIn to see if I know anyone who works there. I recently rejected a recruiter because an old boss was trying to recruit me and he was awful to work with.

I'm currently searching for jobs now and the main and first thing that makes me apply is the culture. I ask myself, "Do I think I would enjoy working here?". If the answer is no then I move onto the next application.

I look at the job description. Is this something interesting? Permanent? Something that I could learn and grow? Something I can offer the company? I then check the list of skills they are looking for. If there is some that aren't critical that they are looking for I wouldn't let that deter me from applying-remember they are looking for the "Ideal" candidate and that likely doesn't exist. Then I would check the company and what people say about them on Glassdoor, etc. Finally as Shelly B said before, what does their application process look like. I am usually doing this at the end of my night after a full work day. Also, if you are asking for things like a social security number, etc. I'll also bypass you-If I'm not employed by you, I'm not giving that on a job application.

Absolutely agree with you Anonymous. I've recently found two companies that asked for my social security number on the application itself. It was a required field, so I entered all 111's and it took it. If I do get passed along in the process I will politely but firmly say I do not agree to have that level of PII (personally identifiable information) on their website, with unknown access, unknown duration and no confidence it is secure. I'd be happy to provide the appropriate information at the time of hire.

It has been a long time since I applied to a job but in the past, I always was interested in what the actual job description was more than anything else. Because if it wasn't interesting to me, then it wouldn't matter where it was or what qualifications were required of me.

I always look at the qualifications first. If I see that I don't meet the qualifications, I move on. If I do meet the qualifications, then I will do some research on the company and decided if I would like to apply or not.

I am the same. If I have the skills they are looking for, I will go to the company page to learn more about them before applying. If the application process is too onerous, I quit it and move on as well...
