is this a terrible time to find a new job?

I'm getting kind of desperate but I also don't want to waste my time as the holidays approach if there's no chance of landing a new job right now... should I just be patient and wait til January to start applying?

It may depend on your industry.  My companies process definitely slows down due to busy schedule and vacations, but we don't put hiring on hold.  Just be patient!

I applied for my last job, which I stayed at for 8 years, while I was visiting my family during the holidays. I took some time away from family to apply, had interviews when I got back, then I was in the job by January 20. This is a good time to keep your eyes open for jobs because others have taken the time off and it's a great time to network into job because of all the networking opportunities others have mentioned.

You're not totally off base here.  There may be slower time periods of hiring because of financial freezes at the end of the year.

Don't hit the pause button.  Keep your eyes and ears open, keep searching and applying.  You never know how a gap could be created.  Someone with your dream job could be retiring at the end of the year.

Think of all the holiday parties you'll be attending.  Now is the time to amp up your networking.   Polish up your elevator pitch.  Let people know that you're looking for new challenges to ignite your best self.
