I know you don't have to like everyone you work with, but one of the direct reports on my team is really difficult for me to deal with. She executes at her job, but every time she opens her mouth, she is complaining. I've noticed the other teammates don't invite her to lunch, probably because no one wants to be around a Negative Nancy.
I've helped her with the complaints that are job related, but honestly, I can't control her roommates, her family, the weather, her dating experiences, her weight, and all of the other things she continues to complain about. It makes me want to run from her every time because I don't have the energy to deal with all of the personal complaining - it's an energy suck.
Any suggestions on how to deal with this? I want to continue to support her in her role, but I am honestly struggling here. I generally don't do well with people who complain a lot and it really gets under my skin, but as a manager, I feel like I need to put that aside, but I'm having a really hard time doing that.
