My organization is going through a massive (and disastrous) re-org which landed me in a 1:1 with my new manager today. We had a great conversation and I am excited for her leadership style, especially after some truly awful leaders. One business item we needed to discuss was my former manager pushing to new announce to our business partners that I would be “taking over” his projects with the re-org. I may have let slip how ridiculous I thought this was seeing as I have been doing all the work on these projects for over a year. She took this in stride and later told me her leadership style was such that she would always want me to get credit for the work I do. And then I cried because in the eight years I’ve been with this company, I’ve never worked with a boss or leader who didn’t blatantly take credit for my work. I even had a VP schedule a career coaching session with me where his sole piece of advice was I should let people take credit for my work more. Those were his exact words. So now I’m not sure if I’ve been playing the game and paying my dues all these years or just letting people take advantage of me.
