Is your employer paying your insurance while furloughed?

I was furloughed in March from my job with one of the worlds largest providers of food service, venue management, facilities services and other outsourced functions. Our client closed the venue I work at and my employer put everyone at our center on furlough. So far they are paying 100% of my health and dental insurance. We were just told the center owner does not intend to open for events until mid 2021. The company contribution to our insurance will end on 9/1 and while we will still be able to collect unemployment and qualify for the company insurance, I have to pay 100%. I feel like this really sucks, without the extra unemployment from the government I have gone from $1000/wk to $450 which is no where enough money to live on. I made about $800/wk after taxes when I was working. My boyfriend cannot add me to his insurance because we are not married even though we live together. I am kind of freaking out and I feel like my company should keep covering the insurance, at least the part they paid for before I was furloughed. I don’t even know how long the unemployment will last so I started looking for another job last week but I am a catering and event manager, no one is hiring.

You are lucky your employer paid your insurance for as long as they did. Typically you have to go directly on COBRA which is expensive. You could try looking at the healthcare exchange (healthcare.gov) in your state as an alternative. Depending where you live and your financial situation, you may have other options. For me COBRA was the best option, but always pays to check all options based on your needs.

You were very lucky. Most companies don't pay for health care benefits. Mine didn't and I was stuck with Cobra.

You are very lucky, I was offered COBRA in June when I was laid off and it was more than I could pay so I put my kids and I on our state health plan which doesn’t even cover my kids therapy, it’s been awful. Luckily I am going back to work next month so I can get back in my company plan.
