I have found that developing an SOP is a stressful process, as it only captures a point in time. The way the world moves these days, the SOP is often outdated the day it is published, and processes have already changed. I wish I had an answer for this type of written documentation. As a manager responsible for onboarding, I was very hands-on until the people could confidently manage their tasks independently. It started with "they shadow me" for a week, then "they shadow a different coworker" for a week. We then met to discuss any differences in approaches that were a cause of concern. Then, "I shadowed them" for a week, and the "coworker shadowed them" for another week. After that, we had another review to determine the employee's readiness to go solo. We worked in case management, and most workers were fully functional with most tasks by the end of the fourth week. They could move on independently with the ability to have someone check their work when they had questions about any particular process.
