How can I get into morning workouts?

I know morning workouts are supposed to be the best for you, but I have so much trouble getting up and doing them. My body takes a while to wake up, and moving it with high intensity in the morning is challenging. But I want to become the type of person that gets up and gets moving! Any tips?

Morning workouts can be hard to start, but once you do them for a while, you will love the feeling of having it done! Make sure you're getting enough sleep first! I do some light stretches in bed first, then get moving. I look forward to that feeling of accomplishment after working out before the rest of my day gets going.

That's what I'm working toward. Good idea about the stretches first.

I'm currently getting up at 530 am and working out every day, but it took me awhile to get there. My first piece of advice would be to make sure you are going to bed early. If I go to bed an hour later than normal, I either won't do my workout or I have such a hard time getting up. Second, pop up out of bed the minute the alarm goes off! Seriously, don't wait. Third, try starting with 2 days a week and see how you feel. It might be that morning workouts aren't actually making you feel the best. It all depends on what allows you to feel accomplished and healthy. Hope that helps and good luck!

I am right there with you! I am not a morning person and working out first thing morning makes me cringe..maybe try midmorning instead of first thing to give you time to wake up.

Thanks, Amanda! I think you're right, and I can get some work done in between.

I am not a morning person either so for a long time i struggled to get myself in morning workout routine. Here is what is best and have been working out for me: wake up and dedicate a full 1 hour to yoga( any kind of yoga or stretch that you like plus meditate ..even 10 minutes) . i train with weights in the afternoon usually so this is really working for me...

I love how you break it up. Do you get dressed for work in between?

I don't think you need to force yourself to move with high intensity if that's not your natural rhythm first thing in the morning. I suggest finding a time of day that works for you, and an activity that you enjoy. It doesn't have to be majorly intense, but should get your heart rate up a bit. Have you checked out any of the fitness videos on YouTube? I also really like the app called "hot 5" which gives you 5-minute exercises to do. Check it out!

I used to be into Blogilates, which has really fun YouTube videos (and now she's expanded to Instagram and TikTok). I'll have to check out "hot 5"!

I have always struggled with this....and still do...but not as much... Act like a rocket and count backward 5-4-3-2-1 and jump out of bed!! It works!!!! :-)

Is there a specific reason you want to work out in the morning? I am NOT a morning person, and work out after work. I love getting all my days tension out by working out. It also helps me eat a healthier dinner and sleep better. Just food for thought :)

Thank you, Jen! I usually work out in the afternoons but have heard of all the benefits of morning workouts - maybe I should stop trying to be something I'm not! The afternoon workouts before dinner are the best :)

I feel your pain. I have very similar issues with my morning runs. I am so much slower. I usually run in the afternoon but due to COVID-19 and GYM being closed, my running path in the afternoon is packed and not possible to run and maintain social distancing. So, I have been trying to figure out a time slot that works for my body and social distancing. Have you considered mid-late morning runs?

I have! I also find that running in the afternoon works best for me, but I have the same issue with so many people out on the paths. I've been making new paths and running more on streets instead of trails. It's not ideal, but it's when my body functions best.

Start small and try to remove any barriers to entry you can. What does that mean? Just commit to 15 minutes every morning. If your body takes some time to warm up, start every morning with strength training, lunges, squats, planks, pushups. At 15 minutes stop the first day, no matter what. You want to train your subconscious mind to see that you'll keep your promise of 15 minutes. The other trick is to put your sneakers right by your bed and for many, they will sleep in their gym pants (no joke) just so they are half dressed. As soon as you wake, if your have everything in your line of vision, it makes the transition easier. Good luck.
