My grandfather was from the depression generation and taught me to 1) save first & last each month and 2) take advantage of 'free money'. For me that means at least 10% of my salary goes into savings/investments each month, and I always join company 401Ks/Pensions. My monthly costs haven't increased in sync w my salary, so I have saved well over that 10% each month for many years. Any left-over money at the end of the month also goes to savings, whether that is for retirement or for a specific goal, like buying a home. I have an excellent financial advisor whom I trust to manage my investments. Thanks to 30+ years of this strategy, I am well-placed for an early retirement. It was hard at the beginning, but it's worth it.

I definitely take advantage of the company 401k match. I also put away a little for emergencies and for time off/vacations. It is getting hard right now because my son is in college, but I refuse to give into credit card debt!
