Just lost

I'm a 22 year old who don't know what to do with her life. I was recently fired from my medical assembly job last year in December because I missed too many work days for being sick. Since then I've been jobless and hopeless. I'm not too sure what I want to do or what kind of job I want. I went to college for less half a year and dropped out. I dropped out because I became depress and become scared of the world that is outside of my comfort zone. I know that being like this isn't positive and it's probably leading my life in the wrong path. That's why I'm writing this as a plea for help or for advice. I really don't have any adults to consult with, so please help tell me what I should do with my life. I want to change and be a better person. Thanks!

There are opportunities ahead of you and you need help finding them. Have you tried seeing if a local community college has a counseling service that could help advise you on a job training program? Also look at nonprofits in your area and see if there is one that serves people in your situation. Here's an example of an organization in Washington State. https://www.wwin.org/what-we-do/pathwaystosuccess/ Good luck!

Hi! You should start by trying to solve the root of your issue. What makes you happy? What do you enjoy doing? What motivates you? After you answer those questions, look at the state you’re currently in and determine if that is conducive to a promising future. For instance, does the city you reside in have endless opportunities? Are the people you are surrounded by, draining? You will get through this. It’s surprising a normal stage for a future superwoman!

Try to look at this time of transition as a great opportunity for growth and improvement. Start with figuring out what you want to do and where you want to do it. What life/career values (flexibility, creativity, independence, support, security, financial rewards, etc.) are most important to you? What are your personality traits? What jobs environments are compatible with your personality? What skills and competencies do you have? Make a list and explore occupations that fit those skills. A tool that you can use to help you with this (in addition to the personality profilers mentioned above (like Myers Brigg), is the O*NET Interest Profiler (sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor). Consider making an action plan: Have you developed a personal brand? What about identifying and responding to job leads? Have you created a list of companies that could use someone with your skillsets and expertise? Have you been networking with the companies you are interested in ? Have you updated your social networking profiles (LinkedIn, FBG, etc.) and your resume and cover letter so they are all up to date and represent the best you? Have you started practicing interview questions? (That next job will come!) Consider upskilling: Look into online courses like Coursera, Udemy, GFCLearnFree.org, LinkedIn Learning, FGB events, etc. to keep learning and add to your skillset. Make sure to update your resume when appropriate. Finally and most importantly, make sure to take care of yourself. Self-care is so important. Find what works best for you in order to be your best self. Hang in there! You have so much to offer! Best of luck in your job search/career journey!

Dear one, in this day and age, I've heard it said, if you're not depressed, you are not paying attention! Young people are facing hardships and obstacles such as those in my (boomer) generation never had. I don't know if you need counseling or medication or treatment as much as you need opportunity and encouragement. Does that make sense to you? I wish I could wave a fairygodboss wand and give you that right now! I have 2 bits of advice: 1) get to know yourself. Take online tests such as Myers Briggs or OCEAN to learn your personality, and aptitude tests to learn your strengths. Analyze your dreams and childhood ambitions to allow goals to emerge. 2) watch for opportunity as if it is a sure thing. Pay attention to coincidences in your life. You may need to get outside your comfort zone to do this! Fear not! Your fairygodbosses are with you to give you feedback along your journey up from the valley of despair. Many of us have been there! Keep posting here so we can watch your progress. And please, keep safe during the pandemic-- I recommend also (ok I said 2 bits of advice but here's a third) taking vitamins. You need D3, the sunshine vitamin, to keep on the sunnyside; B vitamins for nervous system health, C for immune support, etc. Do a little research on this, my dear. And don't worry about college if its not your cup of tea. I never finished and I had a successful career as a designer. (I totally failed as a waitress though.) Do not set your sights too low. This is your LIFE- a gift from God, the Universe, Gaia, or whatever you see as your higher power. Trust that you have a purpose and set about discovering it.

Personally, I'm inspired just by reading this comment! Wow! Yes, Fear Not! And the vitamins... if I take nothing else, I take B complex; Calcium with Magnesium and Zinc and/or Calcium with Magnesium and D3; Omega 3; and Vitamin C. Thank you!

Have you tried looking into certifications like for HR? or compensation? something like that. Depression is a awful thing to deal with, each state still has some programs to assist you with mental health well being. Try googling the state that you are in, mental health programs. For example. "mental health government programs downtown portland?" You should be able to find something that way. Once you get the depression in check then look into certifications in a field that you would like to be in. I hope this helps.

My advice is to find a mentor, someone you respect and admire, to help you discover your true passion. Sometimes it's not about the job, it's about what you like to do and how you can create a career doing something you love. Do you like art, pets, or other past times that you would call a hobby? Volunteering at a local pet shelter can be very rewarding and if you're allergic, there are other places, like food pantries. You might consider volunteering for a nonprofit organization that has a different mission, maybe a museum or a health support group. You'll meet people who are at the top of the giving chain. They can provide a lot of support and advice while you get to know them, and they get to know you. Good luck!

I would agree with the previous comment, but also encourage you to use this time to focus on you. What makes you happy? What drives your passion? Do you like people or animals better? This can help you determine what you want to do with the gifts you have. All of us get down from time to time, and when you hit bottom, there is only one way to go, and that's up. Find someone to talk to, check with a local community college on skill assessments, see where you can make a difference. It will validate you for you. And keep the convo going.... it will help to talk it out.

Do you have healthcare coverage? You need therapy and possibly medication for your depression. If you don’t have coverage, research organizations that provide free services for this.
