Am I in it for the right reason?

I am currently in school to get a bachelor's degree in creative writing. I want more than anything to be a author, of novels. I have always loved writing stories and poems. I will get this degree and Im not sure if I'll be able to get a job doing what I love without it being journalism. I know in my heart that Im the one in charge of following my dream. I am starting to doubt if I'm going about this the right way.

In this digitally rich day and age, content reigns. And guess what the bedrock of it all is? Stories. Yes, stories/narratives that need to be written down as part of the process. Whether it’s marketing copy, social media posts, video/podcasts scripts, someone has to write down all of it. So you’ll have plenty of options for a day job besides journalism. Keep that in mind while writing your awesome novels and you’ll be fine. Also, doubt is a normal feeling whenever you take a huge step toward a dream. Don’t let that doubt turn into fear. Use it as motivation to work even harder.

If creative writing is your passion, I'd say go for it. Of course, you have to be prepared to do jobs that might not involve creative writing while you work on your novel or collection of poems. Personally, I did a degree in Creative Writing too, and I chose to do freelance writing and translation while pursuing creative writing in my own time because I had to find ways to financially support my literary dreams, and I found that these were the next best things I enjoy doing. It's tough being a writer, but it's certainly a fulfilling journey even as you travel down this path. Own your journey, and just keep writing.

Keep writing, thats the best way to get better and build a library of books (written by you!). I am writing my first novel and have been doing freelance ghostwriting on the side. Its a great way to have both...creative writing and stability!

Doing what you love and loving what you do. Sounds like the only reason to pursue a career, despite the difficult reality of attaining it. I’d say go for it, and be ready to do some non-literary work to pay the bills. Don’t ever stop writing. Be open to writing about diverse topics, as long as they help you develop your unique style. Don’t give up. EVER.
