The need to advance

So I have been in my current role for one year and I have 8 years of experience in HR but only 3 in my current role as a recruiter. I want to do more in HR especially since I have a Masters degree that my organization cares nothing about because my role does not require it. How can I move forward so I can advance in my career.

Another tip on getting that experience internally is finding any affinity groups or projects where you can demonstrate other skills that may not be as visible as recruiter. Building off the first comment, hopefully there is someone in your organization willing to invest in you. I also highly recommend building your experience outside of your day job of time allows. There are platforms where you can donate your hr skills (Cathchafire for example), opportunities to join non profit boards, or offer hr generalist advice as a side job to your network. It is all about building experiences you can speak to that add to your brand or narrative as a hr professional, in and outside of your primary role. Good luck!

At a women's empowerment breakfast recently, the panel talked about finding a mentor, deciding the path you want (your future) and asking your boss what skills you need to get there. So for example, if you want to run an HR department, you have this recruiting piece as your current job, but do you need time focused on talent development? Benefits? Onboarding? Finding what you want to be doing and then getting advice/buy in from your leadership is a way to speak up and chart that path. Good luck!
