I was laid off today and I don't know how to tell the people in my life..

I feel very embarrassed, and I'm not sure how to broach the topic with them

If you're not up for one-to-one conversations with family and friends, then perhaps you can send a group email or text. You don't have to spill your guts, just write something like "I wanted to share that I was laid off yesterday. It was unexpected and I'm still working through everything. I'll send everyone an email once I figured out what I want to do next." If you're looking for company, you could also add "If anyone wants to meet up, it looks like my schedule is wide open!" That adds a little humor, but also opens the door to conversation. If you get inundated with questions, it’s okay to respond that you’ll be happy to share details soon/when you see them, but that for now, you simply wanted to keep them in the loop. Hang in there and be sure to check out the Career section on looking for a new position!

It happens! I'm sure many of us here have been let go from our jobs. Telling people that you were let go is genuine and honest. Also remember, every person you know is a potential door to a new opportunity—personally or professionally!

Don't feel embarrassed! This can happen to anyone. Just because you were laid off, that does not mean you're not deserving of a great job... with a great paycheck to match. Whenever you're telling someone about your career status, use it as a networking opportunity. Find out what company and recruiter connections they have. While it might feel like a vulnerable time, this is a wonderful period in your life to choose your next career path. Best of luck!
