Seeking advice about international maternity benefit
Right, so I’ve just relocated from the UK to Singapore with an American company. I’ve been with the firm for 5 years and would have been eligible for generous UK corporate maternity benefits if I’d remained with the firm in London (up to 12 mos leave, 6 mos full pay).
The Singapore policy is two tier. For nationals of Singapore it is 16 weeks paid leave, but for foreigners it is 8 weeks. I’m devastated to be giving up 4 additional paid months plus the option to be on leave with a baby for up to a year.
I’m told by HR that there is no precedent for offering anything more generous but I simply can’t envisage living with this seeming injustice. I’m also told it is my boss’ discretion to be able to offer anything above the standard 8 weeks.
I want to lobby for change for all women in the Singapore office as well as secure a fair leave for myself. What advice do others have for my situation?
Thanks for your support!
