Let's talk side hustles!

I started my Ready Pause Go podcast as a side hustle, but left my job at the end of 2018 to make this my main gig. What do you do on the side of your main job? What are your hopes and dreams for it? Is it for fun? For money? Your future career?

I sell clothing on poshmark app "online thrift shop" and teach group fitness classes at the local Y.

Those sound like great ways to pull in extra cash (and getting your workout in along the way!)

I write and speak at www.inspiringbold.com. I think this actually helps go along with that I do at work.

That's great when it aligns with your main job.

I love bartending and will do it on the side for extra money occasionally. I want to own my own bar one day and this is slowly working up to it.

I must say my dream is to start my own company! But I am so terrified and feel so confused on where to start! I think it's great that you stepped out on faith and are doing what you love to do!

My best advice to get on that path is to start surrounding yourself with the right people. I really do think that just being around people already living your dream can be so impactful. I don't know where you're from, but for me living in Seattle that means The Riveter co-working space, Seattle Startup Week, F-Bomb Breakfast Club... I hope wherever you are, you can find your people! Meetup.com is a great place to start too - or online communities. Good luck!

It's tricky. I think there are so many benefits to having a side gig, but business is SO hard. Sometimes I think it is easier and less stressful to work for a great company as part of a team.

Also, what is the business model for your podcast?

I can totally appreciate that perspective. Sometimes just doing a darn good job at your primary job is the best route - particularly if it's satisfying on all the levels. I just launched my podcast in January so I'm still developing the business model. There is no money in podcasting until you build an audience, so first I'm building that audience. In general, podcasts are best at supporting other parts of your business - online courses, books, etc. - so that is the direction I am pursuing. Big podcasts due generate advertising revenue, but first you need the numbers.

Thanks Erika so much for the info on the Podcasting business model. Ahhhh, the numbers. That is always the tricky part.

I play in a small band, which I love, but it's hard to do too much with considering we all work regular jobs and therefore don't make much money from it. It's mostly just for fun/creative fulfillment but I always say I certainly wouldn't hate it if we randomly blew up one day!

Having a creative outlet is so good for the soul - even if it doesn't yield much $$. But, I'm still hoping with you that you'll make it BIG one day! Imagine all the difficult choices you'd have to make then... It would be a good problem to have!
