Looking to hear about how workplace benefits has helped you

Hi all - I'm working on a piece about workplace benefits and am interested to hear how employee benefits has helped anyone through any particular personal issues (maternity leave, sick parent, etc) and if that particular experience has made you decide to stay or leave the company. Many thanks!

My company switched to unlimited paid vacation the same year I had a baby. It didn't count toward maternity leave, but it was wildly helpful once she started daycare. She was sick almost non-stop the first three months she was in daycare and had to stay home or come home early more times than my previous vacation time would have allowed. The unlimited thing, plus my employer's understanding definitely eased the stress of taking care of my kid.

Like many other posters, working from home benefits are key. I have two kids and my husband works full time, too. So having the flexibility to telework when my kids are sick is really helpful. Additionally, I have unlimited sick leave, which was a major consideration when I signed on with my current company a few years ago. (I had previously worked at a hospital and any time off you took -- sick, vacation or holidays -- was counted as PTO). Lastly, I would also add PTO benefits. When I negotiated my employment with my current company, I negotiated an additional week of vacation. I tell everyone to do this. Companies are much more likely to give you the additional week than they are to pay you that additional salary $$.

My overall benefits are great - strong health, dental, mental health, and retirement benefits. I want to point out how helpful the Employee Assistance Program has been. I've used them only twice but it has been well worth it. Many years ago, I was dealing with my dad's mental health and addiction issues. I was able to talk to someone through the employee assistance program that helped guide me with regard to legal steps I could take and referrals to help for my dad. Years later, while going through a divorce, I was able to get legal guidance that helped me combat some dodgy stuff my ex was trying to pull and basically put him back in his place. All of these services were free and took one phone call.

The flexibility at my company has been super important for me the last few months. My brother had an accident in another country where he has been stuck in a hospital and our family has been taking turns going to be with him. Since my job can really be done anywhere in the world, my company was very understanding and let me take 6 days to go be there and I managed to get all of my work done as well. Trusting in your employees is key. Not all jobs can be done remotely, but when they can, if you trust your employees to do their work, you make them feel empowered and also appreciative.

It’s been quite a few years, and I’m shocked that this is not yet a popular way of doing business! When my friend decided not to return fulll time from maternity leave, I was hired to JOBSHARE with her. We literally SHARED the job. She worked M,T,W and I worked TH,F. She got 3/5 of the job benefits, (personal, vacation days) I got 2/5. There were challenges - we had to make sure, at all costs, not to allow anyone or any assignment to suffer because we had not been there to attend a meeting, etc. This required very detailed notes and handover meetings. Other than that - it was the BEST job I’ve ever had. Everyone loved seeing me, because it meant the week was almost over! We both got to be mommy for long, four or five day stretches - then dress up and go to NYC to be a grownup - all while sharing the best and the stress of the job. I would have stayed in this job forever - tragically my friend lost her husband and had to take the job back full time. This is an incredible way to have it ALLmost.

There were no benefits where I worked. But if I were to choose the benefits, working remotely would be top of the list.

I love my position in my team/company but my recent LOA due to Surgery left EVERYTHING to be desired when trying to get my FMLA benefit payments. I subsequently decided to remove all voluntary benefits from my employer. More because I plan to Exit in 5 years and am prepping but that experience was the catalyst.

My company rolled out backup childcare and backup elder care this year. It is a GAME CHANGER!
