Giving to non-profits

Hi all! I'm putting together a monthly donor program for a nonprofit and I'm wondering - what makes you support a cause? The mission itself? Some perks of being a donor? Do you like knowing what's going on behind the scenes of the organization? Your input is so appreciated!

Personally, I try to give locally first. I usually try to find orgs where my money is going directly to those they serve. If I'm feeling spicy, I'll look up salaries of the org on glassdoor because I want to be sure they pay their employees well, too (sometimes nonprofits expect cheap labor since it's a good cause and I find that exploitative) but at the same time if I can find out how much their execs make and be sure that's not crazy high. This info isn't always available but those are some signs I use to see how an org is using their money.

I give to organizations I care about. As a small business owner I give a percentage of our income. This year I am supporting the PSPCA (Org I rescued my dog thru) Comfort Caring Canines (Therapy dogs), Alzheimers Research (I'm attending a charity event for a local org) and I give money through my Alama Mater to donate holiday meals.

I give to nonprofits that fight for causes I believe in, and whose leadership I trust to be good stewards of my donation.

Honestly: ease of giving. There are many worthy causes I could donate to, but if I can quickly send $5 via a text message or Facebook post, that's the organization that gets my money.

That's so great! I support causes either because I really believe in the mission, or because I believe that they will be effective at their goal.

I base my giving on -The mission of the non-profit: does it align with my values and goals? -The structure of the non-profit: does it pass the test for transparency, accountability and expenses/administrative costs vs. the $ value of what it actually provides to others? -The breadth of the non-profit: does it try to make an immediate impact to small groups/people needing help or is it so broad your donation is just a drop in the bucket? Thanks for asking.
