Getting exercise during the work day...?

How many of you take a break from work to get exercise? I've heard this is a great habit (if you have the ability to do so), but I wonder what people think. Morning, mid-day, afternoon, evening? I used to work out mid-day, but I always struggled to not take 2 hours from leaving the office, to showering, to getting back to work...any tips?

I workout during my lunch break 3, sometimes 4 times, a week. My gym is about a 5 minute walk from my office and has showers there. So I am gone about 1 hour 15 minutes a day for it when I have a 45 minute workout. I've been doing this for YEARS. My job has crazy hours and I am "on call" a lot - so I would sign up for classes after work, and something would come up and I would not be able to go and it would be too late to cancel it. So several of us started the lunchtime workout, that way we can get it in. I have found I am more alert and in a good mood when I get this break. Plus an extra 15 minutes is nothing my department gets shade for since we are expected to check phones at night and weekends. As far as how to do it logistically, I shower in the AM quickly, do my lunch workout, use a "quick dry" hair spray I found or dry shampoo and take a fast shower. When I get back to my desk, I always have a meal in the fridge I can heat quickly and eat while I check emails while I was gone. It does feel "wrong" to do if you are in an environment where no one else is doing it, but once you start, it's great.

Not only does my company offer on-site gym facilities complete with showers, membership is FREE for employees. So I really have no excuse...except, as the OP stated, I don't want to take out 1.5 hours of an already long day to change, work out, shower, and change back. So when I do go, I try to go at a time when I know few people will be there (usually between 3-4) and I do low-impact, low-sweat activities.

I use my lunch hour to take a nice brisk walk most days and try to fit in a 30 minute run two of those days. I bring running clothes and baby wipes to clean up so I'm not stinky and feeling yucky...plus I've got the 15 minutes before and after to cool off.

What I've found to be the easiest when working in an office is to use my breaks for brisk walks, and squeeze in some yoga during lunch. If I worked in a building with stairs, I would use every single opportunity I could to go up or down them. Another way to get more activity in (and this might seem silly, but it worked for me) was to get up and walk over to anyone I needed to speak with. No intercoms, no yelling across the office. All of that added up to a decent amount of activity during the day.

Just taking walks can help give you that break. I will do that at lunch time but I also get up from my desk and take a quick walk. Sometimes I do this just to destress from a rough day. However, a full fledged workout? My co-worker does it. She just does weights instead of doing cardio. I usually wait until after work because like you I just don't have the time to redo myself before heading back to the office.

Yoga or resistance stretching are non-sweaty options that can be done over lunch that don't require a shower, restyling the hair and re-applying make-up. Both are also great for flexibility, improving range of motion and increasing energy levels.

I do work out during the day but only on days when I have light, short-duration workouts (I have some longer days that are more intensive and some shorter days that are lower intensity) because I frankly don't bother even showering afterwards on these low intensity workout days (I have one day where I'm just trying to get my heartrate to 60% of max and sustain it for 20 minutes and I barely break a sweat during that day or at least not one that's more than you'd get from a brisk walk).

Hmm, I've never successfully did the workout during work thing when I didn't have a dedicated *lunch break.* Instead, I'm more apt to fit time in after work or in the morning, simply because I don't have the time during the workday.

For me, it depends on if I can shower and where your location is to where you work (for time). I used to take a break and exercise during the work day but that was because my gym had a place for me to rinse up quickly before heading back. I did LOVE that it broke up my day.
