Stuck

My whole life all I've ever done was customer service, and I feel like I'm not getting anything out of the field, I feel stuck and have no idea where to head next.

Goals should scare a little & excite a lot

What excites your? really excites you? When I sat down and thought about it, I was involved in customer service of some type my entire career. It is also what I received the most joy from. Than being said - what do you not like? Are you in customer service where you are constantly receiving negative feedback (outbound call center) or are you in a retail position that requires a lot of standing or just something that does not feel right for you? As Krista said, write down what you want to do and what excites you. Then check out some employment boards and see if there is something that fits. Also, think about taking a class or two on something you do like - it can be done online or at the local college/university. They also have guidance counselors that are there to help you find what makes sense for you.

Hi! I work with the Trifecta of Unstoppable: Heartset, Mindset and Skillset...when these are aligned, you are truly unstoppable. Everything, absolutely everything that I do with clients starts with their Heartset (your internal true North, highest Self, essence) , so this is where I would suggest that you start. Most of us have been trained not to listen to our Heartset, so where I would know to start is by inviting you to intentionally listen to your heart...this could look any number of ways: daydreaming (yep, like when you were a kid!), journaling, meditating. I'd be willing to bet that there are ideas of what you would love to do, dreams that have been put on the shelf in favor of what was safe or necessary at the time. There is good guidance there, in your Heartset, if you are able to hear it. Practicing listening may well give you insight into what would light you up and fill your bank account at the same time...and then you can move to the next logical step. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any questions.

I agree with previous posts. You could even look at the bigger picture and pick an industry you’re interested in (ex: medical, finance) and see how your skill set could transfer. (If you’re interested in medical, you could look at medical sales or hospital administration etc.) Customer service skills are great to have and can be applied to almost anything!

Feeling stuck and confused is awful. I have two ideas for you. 1) Make a list of all the skills you've built working in customer service and identify which are transferable. I imagine you are good at building relationships with customers/clients, thinking on your feet, and creative problem solving, for example. 2) Go to a website with a lot of different jobs, maybe LinkedIn or Indeed (or Idealist for non-profit jobs), and scroll through. You're not looking for a job to apply for, just inspiration! Make a list of the jobs that look interesting to you and why. Identify jobs that you think you could do. LinkedIn matches the skills in your profile with the skills needed for the job, so that could help as well. If you have the resources, it may be worth working with a career coach as well. It can be super helpful to have an outsider's perspective.

One exercise that may help you think about that next step is to write down the different roles you have had throughout your career so far and list the 3 things you have loved and the 3 things you would rather not do again for each job/role. Once you have this list, you can match it up against different career paths to maximize what you like and minimize what you don't.

You're invited.
