In Between Careers

I am in the middle of a career change between two completely different roles. I've been at my current office assistant role for 5 years now and am really looking to make a job title change before I get "typecast" by recruiters. I'm also really burned out by my job and would love a change of environment soon to salvage some motivation and drive. I am aiming to go into software engineering and am in school completing my CS degree. I am also building a project portfolio and have several mentors, but I feel like I'm still too unskilled to interview for engineering positions. Should I stick it out with my current job while I finish my school/training, or try to find something else? Some people suggested project management but I know that I definitely don't want to go in that direction. Would it be a waste of time to move to PM when my goal is software development? Thank you for any suggestions/advice!
