I have been with my current employer for 8 years and absolutely love what I do. I have not been satisfied with my salary and I was recently approached by another company with a job offer that is 46% higher than I make currently, with a match to my current vacation time (significant). I would be in the same field, but working with a different clientele that would not be as interesting/satisfying as the ones I work with now. I also feel that this new opportunity would be a little more stressful. Long story short, I interviewed and got the position. Being a single mother, a 46% increase is amazing. When I presented this to my current employer, I received a counteroffer matching the salary from the new company, but hours after telling my boss of my intention to leave. I already signed the offer letter, accepting the position, perhaps minutes before I received this counteroffer. It is clear on the letter that it is not an employment contract, but just an agreement to the salary and benefits.
My gut tells me to stay where I am. I love my job, but I would have never expected my current organization (a nonprofit) to be able to match this salary. My current employer is very family oriented and lax. The new company (not a nonprofit) would be more formal and corporate. My concern is my reputation would be impacted if I reneg my letter of acceptance at the new company.
Any advice would be appreciated. I am STRESSED!
