Hi Fellow VIPs I recently got a backend Tip on a new hire that conflicts with the reference checks we had conducted.
This raises concerns as to his capabilities for the role. Any insight on handling the situation would be appreciated

This is a tough one. How trusted is the source of the "backend tip" vs the references?
Are you able to run the candidate through some kind of a test (e.g. ask them to develop a plan, writing test)? Or bring them on as freelance first? Is there a way to have a follow-up conversation and ask some pointed questions about what was shared in the tip without raising red flags with the candidate?

Be honest with the candidate: explain that you have some concerns about XX topic and need to investigate it further. Ask them for their side. Remember that the 'back-end referee' might have a backstory too.

Thanks to you both for the advice. I've sat with him and tried to get more information, but will certainly need to investigate further.
