Tech industry new title "Head Of......"

Cross post. I'm a tech industry veteran and interviewing. I am seeing "Head of" titles (eg Head of People) pop up, esp in startups. Looking for context.......what does this mean? Is it a position between Dir and VP, or more junior than a Dir? In a company of say, 60-100 employees, it seems inflated, and the people in these roles sometimes have 5-10 years of total work experience. Further, if I'm reporting to a "Head of" what should my title be? Thank you.

Speaking as a former Head of HR, I can help out here :) I see a "Head of" as closer to a VP because those are often the same people building/running the dept. More nuances: 1) Do you have P&L responsibility? If so, you are closer to a VP than a Director. 2) I see Director as someone who is still doing the daily operations work but may have a report or two. Often, a Director reports into a "Head of" or VP. 3) "Head of" is definitely not below a Director. I'd really push back on if a company thinks they are. 4) Beware of "Head of really-specific-section-of-a-dept" like "Head of Marketing Analytics and Paid Search" because that's often a way to give out a title without giving you the P&L responsibility
