I transferred over to manage a new team in my division and I have a direct report that my boss, the Director, wants me to fire right away. This employee hasn't been performing, but his previous manager (a peer of mine who left the company) never coached him or gave him any support, because he hired him the last few months that he was interviewing and on his way out and he didn't care. This employee is a good person and honestly has never been given a fair chance at the company to succeed. All my boss can see is low performance, but he's not seeing the whole picture.
I want to give this employee a chance, at least for the next few months, and I want my boss to give me a chance to see if I can get him up and running. But my Director has already made the decision and wants me to fire him. What would you do? I don't want to start a problem with my boss, and I don't know how to stand up to him, but I also feel empathy for this employee and want to give him a fair chance with a leader like me that will take the time to invest in him.
