getting laid off after 3 decades

Over Thanksgiving, my uncle told me he's just been laid off from his job — which he had for more than 30 years! I feel awful. He has two young kids, too. I'm trying to think of ways I can both cheer him up and offer some practical advice.... any ideas?!?!

Unfortunately I think often older workers (who have some of the highest salaries) are often the first to be let go during company restructurings. I think in terms of practical advice, it would be to stay positive. It's hard to tell from the outside how hard or easy it will be for him to find another job but regardless, I think control over negative self-talk and staying productive are important things to stay mentally healthy.

I can relate as this happened to me last year. What is your uncle's profession? The advice might be different for an office worker and a manual laborer. He can use a search engine to search for "job search strategies for the older worker" or something similar. That will be a good start. Monster.com has a number of good resources here: https://www.monster.com/career-advice/article/job-search-resources-older-workers Otherwise, you can offer to help him with updating his resume, creating a LinkedIn profile, dry-cleaning an interview suit, shining his shoes, offer to help with filtering jobs on sites like LinkedIn and Indeed. It's thoughtful of you to want to help. I'm sure he'll appreciate the support.
