As a white woman, I'm so sorry. I don't THINK I make implicit assumptions. But that's the whole point of implicit bias; a potential blindness. Having been raised to be "color-blind", it's likely that I'm not always aware of the injustice that still exists. May I share a point of awkwardness for me? I have acquaintances who refer to themselves as Black. I have acquaintances who refer to themselves as African-American. Of course, I will honor their choice. But when I'm speaking to someone, and there's a reason to refer to someone's race in the conversation (e.g., talking about an older friend who's African-American and grew up in Alabama), I find myself tongue-tied not knowing which word to use. Which phrase is less likely to be offensive?
