Management

Last week, I overheard a few of my supervisors talking about a management position opening up in my department

...And they said that they’re looking to hire from within.  The pay bump is substantial, and the work is stuff I’m already familiar with, so I’ve started to think that I might apply! I’ve always thought that I’d be a great manager but I don’t have any experience. Question for those who’ve been managed before, what has made your current or past manager so great? Looking for inspiration!

You definitely need to go for it!! Always treat your team the way you like to be treated. Surround yourself with good mentors and develop a good rapport with the HR team if you have one. Keep us posted. :-)

A great thing in a manager is when they are rational about their knowledge and those of their managees (is that a word?)

I think what makes a great manager so great is their ability to see the potential in those they manage. If you already know the group you'd be managing, I'd suggest you take a little time to write up what you know about them and where they could shine when you approach the position. "I wanted to inquire about this position, I have seen from the work of this team they have so much potential - for example, I recently worked with Beth on this powerpoint, she's really great at engaging presentations, John and I have also grown closer - and did you know he's really good at excel?" - Showing you know and care about the team you would lead is super helpful!

Go for it. I always encourage people to try for positions, even if you don’t get it, it lets your boss know you are interested in doing more and moving up!

I loved working for manager's who trusted me and allowed me to take on responsibilities/projects that challenged me. I felt that these managers saw my potential, believed in my work and had my back...and being challenged was important for me personally, so it kept me excited about my work.

I like it when people are clear on what they want the team to accomplish and can articulate to each team member what they are expected to do to achieve that common goal.
