Choose job titles that match your company culture. Are you a wellness company that has coaches? Are you a global company that portrays a high profile in the industry? How many divisions do you have? Etc. often HR over shoots on a title that does not portray the role. This is confusing for fellow employees and misconstrues the role. IMO.

I would say stick to the simplest description of the job. If you shorten a job down to it's main purpose, the purpose should drive the title. I have some managers who want very wordy titles so I have limited them to no more than 5 words in a title because no customer will read past that and it forces people to think about the 1 or 2 most important facets of the role.

First of all, determine why you need new titles. What is it you are trying to tell to both employees and customers? Have the duties grown and you want to reflect that in their titles or are your employees being ignored by customers because of their titles? Is the company growing and you want to reflect anticipated new responsibilities that go with the growth? Are you trying to fix a problem? What is the driving force here as that will make a difference?

I'm of the mindset a company does not need new titles. When I see something like that, it usually comes across as a way to play to a segment of the office who are "title hungry". The second thought I have is, "What are you trying to hide that the old title isn't good enough?" Look at customer service - the title has been reinvented so many times as to confuse the job seeker and attract new people.

ask the teams - let them comment anonymously - ask them what roles/titles they think should be added. Give them all 3x5 cards, give them 5 minutes, and then gather them up. My leadership did this recently and I think it was really helpful.

Think in terms of growth and scalability. For example, will you have similar jobs in multiple departments? Do you need job families/groupings? Consider bench marking job titles/roles with salary and job surveys. You may be medium sized now, but you could be larger.
