How do you deal with having to work with someone who got the job you wanted?

Four months ago I applied for a different role within the same company. I realized my current position wasn’t a route that aligns with my long-term aspirations and the open position was a perfect transition opportunity. Although the interviews went well, their team decided to hire externally. Many colleagues recommended the new hire to meet with me for strategic insights and recommendations and while I love supporting new hires, I can’t help but shake that this would’ve been such a great role for me. Every time I’m sharing insights, I think of how knowledgeable and ambitious I would’ve been for this role and I’m constantly reminded by it. I know it’s selfish feeling but it’s hard to dodge the thought when I’m constantly reminded by it. Ladies, I need some advice! How do you deal with having to work with someone who got the job you wanted?

I also second on somehow swallowing that ego and pride and help out! going against your nature of secretly hoping for utter failure so you can get a good laugh is hard BUT having her as an ally is really beneficial. Secondly, to the organization, it will show your management business maturity which is more invaluable than a job post.

There’s no doubt that being passed up for a job you wanted is not the best feeling. This is natural! But the steps you’re taking to help onboard this new hire is helping the better good of the company, so you’re doing the right thing! While it might not feel like it now, this new hire might be a strong colleague to collaborate with. And if she/he is on the team you want to be on, building a strong relationship now will only benefit you in the future.
