Sleep or Exercise? How do you choose...

Is it better to lose an hour of sleep and get a workout in, or get an extra hour of sleep? This dilemma keeps happening in my life and the old New York Times article on the subject just waffles and doesn't give an answer! What do you think?

I think sleep has to come first -- it's the foundation the rest of your life // sense of well-being is based on!

Don’t neglect the workout but be sure to get the sleep. Remember, a simple and quick 15min power workout is better than nothing.

I agree it can be a helpful heuristic to have a rule of thumb but I always still go with what my trainer once told me. You are pulling from your central bank account with everything you do in life. So on any given day, you may need to rest more, eat more, eat less, sleep more, do something relaxing, etc....just be wary and self-aware of how much you are pulling down from that bank account. It's a holistic thing....

For me it depends. If losing an hour of sleep means I'll get 7 or 6 hours, then I'll lose the hour of sleep and work out. But if I'm only going to be sleeping 6 hours and losing an hour means I'll be down to 5 hours, I'll try to sleep the 6 hours and squeeze in a workout after work.

Go to the gym and go to bed a little earlier if possible. Otherwise, sleep in and get a quick workout in after work or during lunch. Don't miss out on the workout.

Managing the two is quite the predicament. I'm a morning workout person so if I have to lose an hour of sleep to feel more healthy I will.

Same. I'm so much more energized when I workout in the morning.
