working for a family business

I have been in discussions with a family run business about a new role. Three siblings own the company and are the only shareholders. It is a mid-sized company, 100-200 employees. I have real reservations about working for a family business, having worked for that sort of operation before I found at the end of the day the family ultimately comes first, both for profits, promotions, and decision making. The HR rep assured me the siblings are involved but there is also a non family member in the CEO role. I can only see negatives around a family owned business but would appreciate any positives that you could share.

I just reached one year with my new company. When I was hired, it was a privately held company of only 95 employees, but with a national presence. I had always worked in much larger companies, so was cautious, but was impressed by the training, processes and procedures they had developed. I haven't regretted joining. Just be sure to ask enough questions to make sure it's a good fit for you.

EVERY family business is different. AND every position with a family business is different. There is no one blanket answer. So, the last sentence here is key: Just make sure to ask enough questions to make sure that it is a good fit for you!
