If you could retire early, what would you do with your time?

Had a great conversation about this with some friends recently. If you could comfortably retire early—for instance, in your 30s or 40s—how would you spend your time?

I have discovered retirement is a mindset and giving up a career for all fun is a drastic change. I'm blessed enough to have made this happen and I have been doing all the things everyone has been mentioning. It's great- and fulfilling, but I do struggle with intellectual stimulation. Oddly enough after my early retirement of 6 years I’m looking at going back to work. Not at the same level or intensity but problem solving and creative thinking all the same.

I talk to a lot of clients about what retirement means to them. So I guess I'm curious what retirement means to you in this context. Does it mean never working again? Does it mean leaving a career you don't find fulfilling but pays the bills to do something else? Personally, I'm not interested in retiring, just scaling back work as I get older to pursue my interests. I want an active, fulfilling lifestyle for as long as I'm healthy.

I agree, we all need to wake up and have a purpose. I wish I could work 4 days and have 3 off...then I think I could work indefinitely!!!!

I would travel and volunteer more. I would also love to learn something new. I'd take classes to learn a new language or how to paint landscapes, try ballroom dancing, or relearn to play the piano. There are so many things I want to do, but never seem to have enough time.

Thank you for asking, Kathryn! I'd love to do a LOT of things: travel; volunteer; try out new activities and hobbies; take on a more personally meaningful but lower-paying (or zero pay) job; and work on special DIY/home projects. I feel like I'd have an endless list of things to do and try out.

Mountain biking and art, start a business related to one of these things that could bring calm in other people’s hectic unforgiving working lives (with less concern whether it’s profitable). I’ve worked at a non profit many years so at slim chance to ever retire I’ll invest in wellness instead, your own and your family’s usually takes a backseat!

Probably take on a foster pet in addition to my own pet and/or volunteer at a rescue. Hopefully exercise a little more. Maybe try and make more come cooked meals instead of eating out half the time.

I would travel more but I'd wonder if I'd get burnt out and want to start working again maybe in a different industry.

I would travel and volunteer more. I already volunteer at the zoo twice a month, but I would probably up that to weekly.

You're invited.
