I'm struggling with an upcoming performance evaluation with my manager. We've been working together for just under 1 year. He is not well respected among the team and tends to hold back feedback until he dumps. Though I have great pride in the quality of my work and have a great working relationship with the rest of the team I don't like this person having power over me. I have been with this company for almost 10 years and love my team so leaving the job is not an option. I'm looking for coping tactics to deal with what I fear will be feedback that will put me on the defensive and could be downright incorrect. How do I argue for myself? How do I get through 45 minutes of this man picking away at me?
As promised, I am reporting back on the review which occurred this week. I was pleasantly surprised and would say I "passed" with an A-, the "minus" being one manager on the team who made a comment about closure and follow up on tasks (though this was largely due in part to my asking them clarifying questions that would go unanswered or would be ambiguous). All in all a good experience and I was most surprised when my boss seemed to empathize with ensuring we were assigning me areas of responsibility that leveraged my strengths vs. improving areas of "weakness". Thanks to all for your support and I hope this experience will help others!
