How to Handle Work Pressure

I have been working as a temporary billing specialist in the business office at a hospital. I put in a bid for a permanent position but was told that in order to be considered they are going to push me hard to see how fast and accurate I am. While they are impressed with me so far they plan to cram more knowledge into my head and train me to do even more things then I am already doing. Sometimes I feel like I am not working fast enough even though I am working as fast as I possibly can. I sometimes feel a bit overwhelmed but I am not sure if that's because I am in a whole new work environment and having to learn how to do billing. My question is how do you handle work pressure?

That's a lot of pressure and it's coming from both sides, the employer and yourself. Here's the thing, you can only go as fast as you can go. Think of it this way, someone tells you to keep up with the fastest sprinter, you may try but it's not physically possible. If all you think about how you're going to keep up, the stress will just get higher and higher and your performance will suffer. The best way to handle this pressure is to perform in the now, every single day. Don't worry about what's to come, what else is on your plate, how fast you're going. Think only of doing the best work you can in the moment. I guarantee, keeping your mind calm will allow you to perform at a higher level, it always does, and you'll be amazed by the results. Don't let overwhelm take over. If you look at all that has to get done, give yourself a minute to panic (that's natural), then plan and chunk your to do list out and focus ONLY on what your current project is without having your mind wander to what else. It's a mindfulness practice (and practice it is) but it will absolutely help you with your stress levels! Would love feedback on how it works for you.

Yes I have worked in many fast paced environments but this one I feel like I have to prove myself and I am trying to figure out how to get faster but their is so much to learn.

How have you handled work pressure in the past? There is generally a learning curve for new jobs so I hope you are realizing that you are doing well by learning as fast as you have. Perhaps, focus on the things you have done well and learned to date and that might make you feel better about where you are at (and take some pressure off). I know this might sound trite but try to breathe (deeply) - this also helps reduce stress.
