An interview mistake that ended with an embarrassing "I'm sorry"

I joined the wrong virtual interview -- and immediately regretted it. I had a 10am virtual interview yesterday. After clicking the provided zoom link, I realized I had just clicked into an interview with another candidate and the interviewer I was going to speak with. This all happened because I didn't change the timezone within my google hangout the night before (as I had just road-tripped to a different state). I apologized an embarrassingly amount of times before leaving the interview I wasn't supposed to be in and then had to re-click the zoom link and face my interviewer an hour later... Moral of the story, ask for clarification about time zones!

This is similar to going to a face-to-face interview an hour early, but walking into the interview room while another candidate is there. Mistakes happen.

This happens so much! Totally not your fault. In fact, you could say you were testing the link in advance, like any good soon to be employee would be doing! Also, this is on them for not using a separate link/sending you the wrong link!

Don't see that as huge deal. This will actually make you stand out and I hope in a good way.

On the bright side, at least you were an hour early and not an hour late, right?!? I agree that this is (a) understandable and (b) preventable by the interviewer. I hope you can move past this small error--don't beat yourself up!

Yeah, never use your personal room code for ANYTHING. At one of my last jobs, we had a project manager who got in that habit, and customers would routinely join the meeting early, only to find us having an internal meeting talking about them and the upcoming meeting. Terrible, terrrible practice. Unique codes for EVERYTHING.

In my new job, I have to schedule meetings for my Executives with people around the world and other States, and the first time I did not realize the other participants were 12 hours away was embarrassing! Luckily I found out this before the meeting and I could look for the best time to suit all of them. Now I am more careful and specify the time zone in the invite.

I agree with all of the above. The interviewer should be apologizing to you. In fact, my bet is the interviewer is feeling just as bad and will never make that mistake again. And if for any reason he/she judges you for joining at the wrong time - well then it's a company you wouldn't want to work for anyway!

Echoing others, this was not your fault. I hope the incident didn’t prevent you from moving forward in the interview process. Good luck!

Many of these links should have correction for your specific timezone. If they are using a single link, the error was on them not you.
