Counter Offering a Promotion Salary

Hi everyone, looking for some help here. I was offered a position, which is a 10% increase from my current salary. However, I want to counter offer with a much higher salary (20%), but I am not sure how to go about doing it. My current salary is already about 10 grand below what someone in my position with same skills, education, and experience makes in my location. Any advice on how I should go about it?

Thank you ladies, unfortunately I did not get the bump, but I think it worked out for the best

It never hurts to ask, glad you are feeling OK about the outcome.

Not sure where you live but in some states (e.g. California, New York, New Jersey, Illinois, and Washington) it is illegal for an employer to ask your current salary or salary history. They are only allowed to ask your expectations for the position. So definitely don't offer your current salary voluntarily. Either way, I agree with Brandi. I would just ask. I would focus on the experience you bring to the position and what the data says about what an equitable wage is for the position. Good luck!

I just went through something similar and honestly, I just asked. I reiterated my years of experience and what I could bring to the company while stating that I was not comfortable with their original offer and countered with what I originally asked for. They accepted. I was nervous they’d say no but I knew I deserved more and that I wasn’t asking much over the average pay for the position.
