5 ways to heal and bounce back from your pandemic job loss

I’m among the millions who lost my job during the COVID. And yes, this kind of admittedly entailed languishing in bed, because that is a form of just getting through. I’m now better than I was before this pandemic began so I wanted to share how I adapted and conquered this abrupt change. 1) Do nothing: That’s right. Clarity can come when doing nothing and just being with yourself. 2) Reflect: It’s important to remember who you were before losing your job. I built back my confidence each day by doing so. 3) Spread some kindness: Do something kind like sidewalk chalking hearts around parks (this was fun) or contributing to a small business. Doing something for others will make YOU feel better. 4) Be patient with yourself: The only one that can heal your loss is you. Acknowledge that grieving is hard work and not an overnight thing. Accept where you are first and then make moves to conquer your next ambitious dreams second. 5) Search for your next step: Thanks to this community, I found a new job. I found a job on Fairygodboss and throughout the interview process, I asked for FGB advice (specifically resume & interview-related) when I needed it. So thank you for listening and hearing my story. I hope this helps give others with the confidence boost many might need (I definitely needed). And if you’ve been here before and/or would like to contribute more points/thoughts on this matter, please share!

Agree! Especially #4. I too was laid off due to COVID19. It's been 104 days and I definitely did not expect it taking this long. But following similar steps to the ones you've mentioned along with continuing education (both in ways that are related to my career and some that I'm just curious about - like tarot cards!) have been a bit of a silver lining.

Love this advice. Too often we're so keen on jumping into the next opportunity/job, that we don't give ourselves the time that we need to heal, reflect, and reset. The fact that you allowed yourself the time to do so says a lot about your ability to look inward and forward even in the midst of troubling times.

Terrific advice here and congratulations on landing a new job! You sound like someone who really takes time to reflect, regroup and take positive action. I am not surprised were able to get a new job so quickly. Best of luck!

Oh I love each of these! Too often when women lose their job they immediately move onto the next one in a panic without figuring out what they ACTUALLY want to be doing next. Amazing for you to take an opportunity to sit with yourself first.

Preach! It's so counterintuitive in our culture to pause and take a breath before doing into the next thing but it's very necessary when it comes to career satisfaction!

This is wise advice. There are many going through the same things. You always make the best decisions when you've had time to reflect, reached out to others, and have peace in your heart. All the best to you and your journey.

This is great advice! My husband lost his job during Covid-19 and is really struggling. He is in the garment industry, which was struggling before Covid, but so many retailers have gone out of business. He was with the same company for 20 years and computer challenged. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
