There is not one definition of success. It is relative to each person so I don’t think we should measure it from society’s standards or as third party. If one is content and happy with how his life is/has turning/ turned out; if he feels he is/has fulfilling/fulfilled is mission in life then that is being successful at least to me.

Perhaps living off the Grid and back to the land is their idea of success in their life. It isn't about the money or the job title, it is about how you feel about yourself.
