I work in a Diversity Office in Academia that has done nothing for diversity, esp in faculty and hiring, since I got there (last October). With all the visibility now, everything I have been begging to be cleared so I can work on them (contact letters, drafts, etc) are now front and center, while glossing over that it had been ignored to begin with. Now that the Senior Associate Dean (my direct supervisor) was called out in a student voted on and presented document concerning the glaring Diversity issues at the school, the S.A. Dean is trying to change the optics so we LOOK better, and also pushing the same complaints of 'without funding we can do nothing' excuse that has been the go to since before I got here. This person is out of touch and unfit for such a position in Diversity, to the point of suggesting to the office staff to read To Kill a Mockingbird to help us understand what is going on. This person has no 'new' ideas on how to approach the issues at hand and is asking everyone for ideas (that she will then label as her own, she has done this historically and recently). I believe and know this behavior has been and will be unethical, and I cannot sit here and act like it is acceptable on any level. This person avoids the personal accountability and hard work that is required to help shape and change work culture, which is the top problem aside from money. All this person wants is the visibility, praise, title, and salary, yet none of the work it entails.
How do I make a difference in this kind of work environment? I can't even give more details without making this post a mile long, and indigestible. When your leadership is categorically unfit, inept, and uninterested, how do you proceed?
