Finding your passion

How do you know what you want to do with your professional life after being a being a stay-at-home mom for 10 years? I don't love what I used to do anymore (public health). How do you find your passion? Seems silly, but is there a class out there, that helps you figure it all out?

LOL @ embroidery stitching.. All great points. I will look into the course and now I want to create a vision board to define what absorbs me. Maybe vision boards? LOL

Girl, I have no idea. I think "passion" is damn over-played for a lot of reasons. The most helpful thing anyone has said to me about "passion" was this: think about what totally absorbs you, what you lose time doing. Even all the way back to when you were a little girl. That helped me figure out what my passion is. But truthfully, despite every Instagram meme that says otherwise, I'm not convinced that "following your passion" is a great career plan. It's oversimple. Like if your passion is cross stitch, do you REALLY want to make a career out of that that will support your family and afford you enough income to bay your bills and buy more embroidery thread??? On a different note: if you're looking for a class, I highly recommend my client's BRAVE course here: http://karenschachter.com/brave-online-intensive/ Enrollment is open right now and if you're interested, I can see if there's a coupon I can extend you! She's the woman who asked me that question about what absorbs me, which very literally helped me figure out what my passion is...!

I'm with you on the passion thing, Eva. It's not a guaranteed path to a happy career. It reminds me of Mike Rowe's TED Talk (he's my ultimate dream man )...where he also challenges the passion path, using the example of a guy he apprenticed with on his show, Dirty Jobs, who built a huge, successful business turning cow flops into bio-degradeable flower pots. Would he have called that following his passion? No feakin' way. Can someone get really excited about a business that solves a need/problem in a unique and innovative way? You bet. :)

In addition to my work in social selling and employee advocacy enablement for large companies, I also offer personal branding coaching as a critical component of getting to "why." One tool (among many) I recommend as great input to a person's brand and in exploring the right career path in line with someone's passion, natural talents, and interest is MAPP (Motivational Appraisal Personal Potential) assessment. The acronym is better than the actual assessment name (could it sound more boring?) because it spits out a great report with 20 potential careers and a lot of details on your personal aptitude (ie, with people, data, things, communication, numbers, etc) - which can provide helpful verbiage you can use in interviews to tell hiring managers how great you are. :) To learn more, the web site is here: https://assessment.com/ I like it so much, I'm an affiliate, so if you take the test, I'd appreciate you using my link (it costs you nothing, but I get a couple bucks). :) https://assessment.com/TakeMAPP/?AccNum=06-1081-000.00 Good luck! Finding your purpose is so important....being able to profit from it once you do is even better. :)

I have found through the years that my passion isn't always a 1:1 lock with my job. I enjoy my job very much, though I have passions outside of it. My balance has been my job providing me the stability to execute on my passions, and I'm at peace with that. Good luck getting back in the swing of things! We are happy to help you with the transition any way that we can.

I would sit down and ask yourself whether the reason you don't know what your passion is simply because you haven't tried anything (yet!) that has made you feel that way -- rather than assume that there is a fixed answer. Just as children don't know what they like to eat until they've tried a lot of different foods and taste experiences, in my view, sometimes the reason someone doesn't know what their passion is, is simply they haven't done something yet that hits the nail on the head. Instead of beating yourself up for not having a passion and thinking there's something wrong with that, I'd ask myself whether its simply just that you need to try a handful of new things and see if any of those experiences makes you feel anything and explore from there...

That makes sense. But what would I try? That's the issue. The "sky is the limit" and that's the problem. If I'm presented with too many choices, I get overwhelmed and stuck.

I just became a stay at home mom a few months ago and am already wondering what I should do when I return to work in a few years. I’m excited to see what others suggest!

Finding your passion is so important. Have you considered on working with coach to deal with it? I know I work with personal passion and goals with my clients. If you want to have a call about it, feel free to schedule a session at DressingRoom8.com

I don't know if I should work with a coach. I did try to contact someone a long time ago and she wasn't a good fit. I'll check your website. Thanks!

I love Ikigai as well. It's a great introspection exercise and makes so much sense.
