College Student

I am a college student and every time I am in the city I try to meet up with my cousins who are older and work. When we get together they always treat (even tho I try to say no!)- should I feel awkward about this since its always my idea to meet up? I don't want them associate seeing me with spending money etc

Perhaps a little gift for them at the lunch, and definitely doing well for yourself in your studies, so you do line yourself up to pay it forward in the future, but don’t feel awkward , They would not do it if they couldn’t, but definitely remember where you came from. Acknowledge their support and always keep in touch. You are blessed to have family like this.

Let them treat you, as they seem happy to do so. But remember what they did for you, and in 5, 10 or more years, when you are in a stable job, treat others. Maybe a cousin, or a friend who is still in school, or someone on a low retirement income!

Let them gift this to you and show your appreciation. Bring them a small gift and once you graduate and have your first job, insist on taking them out for dinner as a thank you.

Enjoy your cousins’ generosity and don’t feel awkward— they would not meet you and pay for activities if they did not want to. I concur with the advice to; 1)pay it forward (reciprocate in future years when you are working); and 2)reciprocate now with notes and an occasional appreciation gift that you can afford. In addition, encourage inexpensive or free activities for some of your get-togethers.

Not at all! You'll pay it forward later on in your life :)

I understand that awkward feeling. You can try to enjoy their generosity and see what you can offer them...home baked cookies, a small plant, a great selfie of all of you that you share with them (or print out?)...inexpensive ways to show you appreciate them. They understand where you are at on a college student's budget.

I don't think you should feel awkward at all - they probably remember what it is like to be in college and they are in a place to treat. I think what you should do is remember their kindness and maybe send them a handwritten thank you note as a token of appreciation. Additionally, when you are older and have the ability to help out a college student, don't forget to do so! :)
