Lost

Where would you start if you were me? I'm in my early 40's, been in the same position/company for well over 10 years, not room to advance or do anything else without relocating out of state but due to numerous problems with my house/HOA that's not an option. My house not sellable or rentable right now. I'm not a career-driven type-A person. Had my son when I was in my 20's and have based career decisions on income and how close to home and school the job is. I couldn't be gone 10-12 hours a day or deal with a long commute since I had no backup. I don't like the company I am in or what I do and don't know what I want to do. I do send out my resume to positions that match my skills and that look interesting but I rarely get interviews and I'm never offered the job. My last interview was 3 years ago.

Based on your post I’m assuming that you only have one child and that they are grown so location is no longer an impediment to your search. If you can sell your home under market but not at a loss do it to account for any upgrades/remodeling that needs to be done I would suggest that. It will hurt but will allow you to widen your search area and get you out from under the stress and pressure of the home. You don’t say what you currently do that you don’t like so it’s hard to help with advice on what to do for learning opportunities or career pivots. Maybe take some continuing education courses at the public library to help with skill sets. Look at taking courses at your local/community college? Definitely let your support network know that you are looking and they may be able to link you up with jobs at their companies that are hiring.

Who is in your network? Reach out to them, friends and family have great knowledge of someone needing someone. Reach out to businesses when you are in see if there’s side work you could pick up! I once bagged some extra work from a dryer cleaner whose seamstress was on pregnancy leave. I subbed in until she was back and was able to alter and repair in my own home!

You could try adding another skillset to your resume through online courses. Adding Agile, Lean, or Analytics to any existing skillset is an asset. Networking is a must, though one I personally hate.

If you haven't yet, reach out to a recruiter and let them know you are looking. Have a conversation with a friend or mentor to talk through the things you like to do and what jobs they may translate to. Then have the same conversation again with another friend or mentor. Then stay encouraged. Know you have value. Keep track of your wins (it's too easy to count the losses).

Unfortunately getting interviews is not easy these days. Apply for any and everything you can. Don't get discouraged. Make sure your LinkedIn profile is optimized and try uploading your resume on sites like ziprecruiter. What field are you looking to get into?

Not sure! I'm tired of being in an office 40 hours a week, tied down to a desk.
