Who's the best manager you ever had?

What did they do that was particularly great?

This question (who your best manager was and what made them great) made me smile as I thought about one of my best managers. We worked on different continents, but other than the time difference, you would have never known it. She always made me feel truly heard and valued both for my professional work and in general as a person. She wanted me to succeed and grow and was always lifting me up to learn more and encouraging growth based on understanding my experience and career goals. She empowered me to do amazing work (taking risks, trying new things, and driving projects) by sharing with me not just goals but also the why of what we were trying to accomplish. She was transparent with me helping me see the lay of the land and understand what was coming. I still think about this manager frequently and would work for her again in a heartbeat. To all the great managers out there: keep investing in growing your people. Keep listening to their goals and needs to help them feel valued as a person. Keep pushing them to do more than they thought was possible to help propel them towards their goals. This support will most likely yield people who will do more than what is expected and are loyal for life!

I've had a few great managers, and I think the two qualities they had that really defined that were their frank and honest discussions with me, and their genuine interest in seeing both their career and mine grow.

That's a hard question because I have had a few that I would qualify as "good," but for different reasons. One was great at coaching and teaching what she knows. Another is a great project manager so she keeps everyone on track and moving forward, and another is just a very caring individual who puts tremendous stock on making sure the team gets along. I can't say I have a favorite, but I would say if I could put the traits of the three above together and add 'someone who backs you up and makes you feel like you have someone in your corner' that would be a GREAT manager!

No matter how busy she was she always made me feel like I was important to the organization and available to help me.

The best manager I ever had was the polar opposite of me, personally and professionally. But it was amazing to see how I could work for and alongside someone who was demographically and personality-wise so different. It taught me to see the world in a new way -- not just work, but more broadly.

The best manager I ever had took the time to mentor me, provided me with the tools and encouragement I needed to advance my career. Most of all he provided me a safe place to grow and learn from my mistakes.

Best manager I have ever had was when I worked a little rinky dinky retail job at Best Buy when I was 18. The young lady did everything within her knowledge to help me grow and thrive as a young lady just starting out in the world. She was amazing! She prob has no idea the impact she made on my life.

A great group of 4 men who not only trained but mentored me many decades ago in the Creative Production industry. They were kind, patient and amazing as Directors and Producers. Did I mention kind? No assholes among this group!
