I didn't do a cross country trip but I did the Northeast. Rhode Island, Mass, Upstate NY, Montreal, Vermont, New Hampshire & Maine. My longest drive was only 4 hours. Took a week off work and spent 1-2 days in each spot. Best vacation I had all year. It was amazing.

I've driven from the SF Bay Area to Pennsylvania and New York and back during December one year with two dogs and my husband at the time. A highlight was if we saw some sign saying something that we thought we might want to see, but thought we'll never be this way again, we'd stop. In Illinois, that took us to Abe Lincoln's family homestead. In addition to the log cabins and outbuildings, we saw a huge flock of wild turkeys. While the driving can be a bit treacherous in the winter, the scenery is first-rate all across the country. The other favorite part was stopping at family run diners and country kitchens. The amount that claim to have the best pie is mind-blowing. :)
